Sarris, Jerome, Con Stough, Chad A. Bousman, Zahra T. Wahid, Greg Murray, Rolf Teschke, Karen M Savage, Ashley Dowell, Chee Ng, and Isaac Schweitzer. 2013. "Kava in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder." Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology
Results revealed a significant reduction in anxiety for the kava group compared with the placebo group
Munte, TF, HJ Heinz, M Matzke, and J Steintz. 1993. "Effects of oxazepam and an extract of kava roots (Piper methysticum) on event-related potentials in a word-recognition test." Neuropsychobiology 27: 46-53.
In a study evaluating event-related potentials (a measure of brain activity) in a word recognition memory task, the benzodiazepine oxazepam showed a significantly worse Recognition rate while kava showed an increased recognition rate.
Wheatley, D. 2001. "Kava and Valerian in the treatment of stress-induced insomnia." Phytotherapy Research 15 (6): 549-51.
Stress was measured in three areas: social, personal, and life-events; insomnia in three areas also: time to fall asleep, hours slept, and waking mood. Total stress severity was significantly relieved by kava, as was insomnia.
Possible Anti-Cancer Effects (particularly cigarette smoke-induced lung cancer)
Steiner, GG. 2000. "The correlation between cancer incidence and kava consumption." Hawaii Med J. 59(11):420-2.
A number of countries in the South Pacific have very low cancer incidence in spite of a high percentage of the population habituated to tobacco. A number of studies have noted the low cancer incidence in these countries and have postulated that a dietary chemopreventive agent might be responsible. The data indicates that the more kava consumed by a population the lower the cancer incidence for that population.
Mental Alertness, Attention
Nobre AC1, Rao A, Owen GN.Asia Pac. 2008. "L-theanine, a natural constituent in tea, and its effect on mental state." J Clin Nutr. 17 Suppl 1:167-8.
These data indicate that L-theanine, at realistic dietary levels, has a significant effect on the general state of mental alertness or arousal. Furthermore, alpha activity is known to play an important role in critical aspects of attention.
Asian Ginseng (Panax Ginseng)
Pain, Fatigue, Sleep Quality
Braz AS1, Morais LC, Paula AP, Diniz MF, Almeida RN. 2013. "Effects of Panax ginseng extract in patients with fibromyalgia: a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial." Rev Bras Psiquiatr. Mar;35(1):21-8.
BASED ON THE DATA OBTAINED IN THIS STUDY, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONCLUDE THAT THE PANAX GINSENG ROOT EFFECTIVELY PROMOTED AN IMPROVEMENT IN PAIN, FATIGUE, AND SLEEP QUALITY COMPARED TO BASELINE DATA.
